Using the Press

To take the print

This press is extremely simple to use. All you need is a board which will slide inside the press. On this you will place your Lino, paper, blanket, packing etc. and then slide the whole thing inside the press. Make sure the central area of the print is in the centre of the press bed. Now the press can be wound down using one hand to spin the handle whilst supporting the top platen with the other hand. Once the top platen has made contact with the bottom platen, you can then tighten up the press. This will probably be about another turn of the handle. Please note you should not need to use excessive force to take a successful print.

The press has 4 holes in the base of the frame under the bottom board which can be used to screw it down in a permanent position if preferred.

To achieve the best results with this type of press, you will need some form of packing either with a press blanket, newspaper or some other type of padding. This helps to spread out the pressure producing an even print.

We do have flannel blankets which are cut to the size of the press bed. Further details of these can be found on the 'To Buy' page.

Looking after your press

Before using the press for the first time and throughout its working life, it is extremely important to keep the thread well greased with proper, thick grease. From time to time the base of the thread will benefit from greasing and this can be done by loosening the nut on the side of the thread.
